Things to do
Helmsley & the North York Moors
Helmsley is a historic market town on the southern edge of the North York Moors, with independent shops, cafés, good places to eat and plenty of character around the market square. The Helmsley Retreat is a short, easy walk from the town centre, so you can leave the car and explore on foot.
Helmsley through our eyes
A few of our own photographs, as a glimpse of the town you can explore during your stay. The ruins of Helmsley Castle sit just beside the town centre and look different with every season and every change of light.

Duncombe Park and the surrounding countryside
Duncombe Park lies right on the edge of Helmsley, a historic estate set in parkland and woodland. Beyond the town, the countryside opens out into fields, woodland paths and wide views. Check the Duncombe Park website for current visitor information before you go.

Stonework among the trees
There are smaller details in the landscape too: an arched stone bridge over the water, or a round pavilion tucked among the trees. These photographs offer a closer look alongside the wider countryside views.

Quieter country moments
Bluebells beneath the trees and sheep with a young lamb bring a different side of the countryside into view. A few of the little things that make these photographs worth sharing.

Explore the North York Moors
Helmsley makes a useful base for the wider North York Moors, with countryside walks, quiet villages and scenic drives all within reach. The National Park website is the best place for up to date walking advice, maps and visitor information.
